📊 JLPT Levels Explained

Level Skill Level What You Can Do
N5 Beginner Understand basic phrases, greetings, hiragana, katakana. Can hold simple conversations.
N4 Upper Beginner Understand daily conversations and commonly used expressions. Read basic kanji (~300).
N3 Intermediate Understand general Japanese used in everyday situations. Can follow TV news with some help.
N2 Upper Intermediate Understand complex conversations, read newspapers, write formal emails. Required for most jobs and university programs.
N1 Advanced Near-native level. Understand academic texts, technical terms, business Japanese. Needed for high-level jobs or postgraduate studies.
